attack speed/ ability dmg scaling from weapon dmg

I was wondering about this while watching the 7 minute video showing the monk specially using mostly his combo attacks. http://www.youtube.com/diablo#p/u/1/O-oT585bQUo ....

- The question is if his combos will perform faster with more AS?

- Will he have as much dmg output if he chooses AS over pure weapon dmg?

Improved attack speed would become a junk stat if that wouldn't be the case, since at higher levels I bet that more than 90% of your damage will be dealt by skills.

That could depend on a lot of things, we simply don't have enough information yet to decide.|||Will attack speed affect some sort of global cooldown for skills ala wow ?

Attack Speed is usually a pretty pimp stat to have, but I have no doubt that there will be major theorycrafting before the beta is even finished.|||Quote:

From the gameplay vids it seems that there's no global cooldown in D3. Only the length of the skills animation limits how fast you can use different abilities after each other.|||Quote:

I suppose then the question would be the same ? Would attack speed increase the animation time ? I remember how quickly my little barb's arms would wiggle with two very fast swords, looked like a silly action figure animation|||Quote:

I assume you meant decrease instead of increase. And again, I think that will be the case, otherwise IAS will be a useless stat.

With Frenzy, the barb will be able to reach ridiculous attack speeds in D3 as well, even with slow, two-handed weapons. Check out this arena footage from BlizzCon 2010.|||If IAS doesn't increase the speed of the attack animations of your skills then it would completely useless, especially for a monk. After the monk get's their first combo skill (lvl 1) they'll never use the basic attack ever again. At high levels no class should be using their basic attack anymore and 100% of their dmg will come from active skill clicks since there are no 'white swings'* in D3.

*For non-WoW players, white swings are basic attacks your character does whenever you're in combat and in melee range of an enemy. It's essentially free dmg.|||Quote:

Functionally speaking, that is a global cooldown, varying in length depending on the skill used.|||Animation lock and global cooldown have subtle, but relevant enough differences. The primary being is that cooldown prevents you from using skills, animation prevents you from taking any actions until completed.|||Quote:

Really those two factors vary from game to game. Some GCDs prevent any action, some animation just stops skills. Sometimes there's a bit of both. Sometimes either one can have exceptions.

The only major difference is that animation is a more integrated system, whereas GCDs are more abstract.
